Film
Somewhere
May 9th

Like most Sofia Coppola pieces, Somewhere was too smart for me. I think it’s because I have no attention span. But there’s something about it I like. Probably because it’s a hipster’s dream and I want to be cool.
For people who love celeb culture as much as I do, it’s worth checking out because it follows a lonely Hollywood star living in the Chateau Marmont. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be famous, here’s a glimpse- and it’s not pretty.
It’s also worth watching because of Elle Fanning. The younger sister of Dakota, this film serves to further introduce Elle to the industry. I think she may eclipse big sis thanks to her classical beauty, more reserved voice and choosier film choices. But Elle’s still a tween and things could change.
I watched the bonus feature on the DVD and Coppola said the film felt like a return to film school films for her; a narrative that doesn’t necessarily have to have that strong storyline leading somewhere. Coppola was going more for an idea and a tone, not so much a plot, per se. So maybe Somewhere isn’t too smart for me, maybe I just expect formula.

I wanna see: Martha Marcy May Marlene
May 9th
I can’t wait for Martha Marcy May Marlene to hit theatres. It stars Elizabeth Olsen - yes, sister of the famous twins - as a woman trying to assimilate to normal life after fleeing a cult. The flick is set for release on July 10 and I can’t wait! Here’s the trailer:
Jane Eyre
Apr 30th

I’m normally not a fan of time period pieces, but I really liked Jane Eyre. It was spooky, romantic and heartbreaking. Usually films set in the “olden days” are too slow moving for me, but the fantastic editing and cinematography gives Jane Eyre a fast-paced feel, while staying true to Charlotte Brontë’s novel.
The film stars Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) as Jane Eyre, a governess who falls in love with her employer. But the film is no simple love story; Jane had a tough upbringing – which the film details – and later manages to gain employment as a governess in a beautiful estate. While Jane does fall for her boss, she also discovers a terrible secret he has kept from her.
Sidenotes: a grown-up Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) plays St. John Rivers. Also, I’d like to see Mia Wasikowska play Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter (Paltrow would’ve been a young mother, but their resemblance needs to be used!)
